Anti Natal

Okay, I know they spell it antenatal, the anti Natal is a reference to the Super 14 Rugby competition that is starting in a few short weeks. Got so many mates and my wife, who support the Sharks from Natal. It always makes for interesting Stormers vs Sharks clashes. And this year, it is a home game which I will be watching from our box at Newlands...
Hold on, perhaps I should check the dates... 5 May... Spud will be about a month old! Can you believe that. He'll be able to watch his first Stormers whipping the Sharks butts rugby match. I wonder if I am going to be allowed to watch it??

We went for our first antenatal class last night. Very interesting, and I recommend that if you do ever conceive a child that you go to these classes. My sister is dead against them and said lots of horrible things, so I was kinda in two minds before going.
We didn't get off to the most auspicous start as we watched the most bizarre video of Active Birthing. These Europeans are crazy. I think the thing that scared me the most was that the gardner hadn't trimmed the bushes for waaay too long! (can I say that?)
Other than the ladder climbing, rope hanging, weird postion lying video, the general conversation was great and extremely informative. There are some things about brith and pregnancy that people just don't tell you. Well, we started to find out about some of them.

C has actually come away feeling really positive as well. That was really important and a bit of a relief for me.
Me on the other hand... well, I'm happy cos the midwife said we could bring beer for half time next week!!

Something cute for today... Spud had hiccups on the way to antenatal. It is so funny. little jerks and shakes as h hiccups away. i tried scaring him, but C said that wasn't too funny... I was just trying to help...

Back to reality...

Things have suddenly taken a bit of a turn. Everything is fine with Spud, but one of my great fears for this pregnancy was that C's back might give in... It ain't the strongest in the world and there is a bit of a history of problems.
Anyway, on returning home from work on Wednesday, I found my poor darling crying at the front door. It had happened. Here back was in spasm. There was nothing we could do. I tried massaging which relieved it a bit, but then it would just come back. Eventually, out of desperation, we resorted to drugs. Unfortunately not the mind altering type, but rather those of a pain killing muscle relaxant nature. Got advice from Dr Z, (am sure there'll be a bill in the post), and it seemed to help a bit.

So, its been a tentative few days with C trying not to do to much.
That means more dishes and housework for me... Which I expected to happen, just not so soon. I don't really mind as she does so much for me, but I am very excited that Angel is returning to work tomorrow! What would we do without her!

C went for a checkup last week, just to make sure everything was okay. Had a scan and Spud was SO cute. He was sucking his thumb which just looks adorable, and even had hiccups at one stage. How funny.

I bought a CD of classical nursery rhymes. Pretty cool, cos it helps us with the tune for some of the ones we don't know that well. Now for us to sit down and start singing. It'll be like Karaoke, except with less beer and tequila shots, and more sober embaressment at the sound of our own voices...

This kid has really taken a hold on our hearts. C told me just how much she loves him... our next door neughbour said to me, "Take those feelings and multiply them by a thousand, and then you'll start to realise how you're gonna feel when he's born..."

I can't wait!

Loving Spud

I am really loving this stage of our pregnancy. I say ours, cos I am kinda responsible for the little guy's creation. Thats one amazing miracle right there.
Lying in bed and bonding with him is quite incredible. When I put my hand on C's tummy, he starts to move around and kick and generally gets quite active. I just thought that he did this if anyone put their hand on C's tummy, but thats not quite true.
In fact when other ppl put their hand to feel him moving, he lies still and doesn't! Now this could be just that he is sleeping, which they tend to do, but I am almost convinced its cos he recognises me. He can definately hear my voice and seems to get more active when I am around and talking to him, or to Cath.
We lay in bed and read the book I gave him for Xmas... yes, a bit cheesey, but had to be done. I got him a book of nursery rhymes... okay, it was for C and I cos we can't remember many. So, there we were the other morning lying in bed and reading things like "Wee Willy Winky", "Jack and Jill" and of course "Rock a Bye Baby".
I was actually quite shocked when I read some of them, cos they really aren't very nice. Paul Kerton, in his book Fab Dad, reckons that you should just be singing anything to the baby, as long as it's soothing. Well, Rock a Bye Baby is all about the wind blowing the kid out of a damn tree! Thats just horrible!
And then of course there's all the references to gay and being gay and how gay they were... I am no homophobe, and I know its a generation thing, but the word has a very different meaning in the naughties...
Anyway, I am now on a search for a nice soothing nursery rhyme or song that I can sing (scary thought) to Spud in order to help get him to sleep. Any suggestions?

Happy New Year!

Welcome to 2007! I cannot believe that 2006 is actually over. It was just getting started... I have been really crap at posting over the past month, this is due to December just being to damn busy. We had umpteen staff and client Xmas parties and absolutely ridiculous amounts of work to get through.
It would seem that everyone wakes up in the last few days of December and realises they haven't organised some posters/calendars/New Years Adverts etc And then want us to drop everything to get them out. Crazy man, and of course, we are the only suppliers open through the Christmas Drag - those 3 days between Xmas and New Year. Sheesh, was I busy.

We went for a 26 week scan, which was really cool. Spud is growing extremely fast now and in the three weeks between our last feotal assessment and the latest scan, he went from 656g to 1216g. Thats nearly double in size! It's no wonder C's stomach is looking so big. She really looks pregnant now and everyone is commenting on just how gorgeous she looks. She's carrying forward and quite high up, which makes for a very hot preggie mom!! The only weight she seems to have put on is all baby related, so she hardly even looks pregnant from behind. Different to one of our mate's who's wife has apparently put on 19kgs already! That is an awful lot of weight... I hope she can lose it, cos she was a pretty little thing before this!

Christmas was good fun. Spent Eve with C's family, which is alwasy entertaining if not somewhat tiresome. There is this competition for who can say the most outrageous thing, which can be funny... lots of lovely wines were floating around, Meerlust Rubicon 1999 being the best. It really is amazing stuff.
Spent Christmas day with my family which was fantastic. Very relaxed fish braai. spent lots of time with lil' G which was awesome. Its amazing how much she has grown and grown up.
Boxing day was also fantastic, we went out to Le Franschoek Hotel's buffet restaurant called Le Verger. 5 different stations with Salads, Curry, Stir Fry, Braai/Grill, Pizza and dessert! Awesome food, amazing setting, fantastic fun. Definately worth a visit, and relatively reasonably priced, altho the wine list is a little steep.

The company yacht was launched a few weeks ago, and we were lucky enough to be able to go out for a suneset cruise to Clifton. Really amazing altho C got really sea sick. Damn Spud causing problems with his mom!! That meant that we had to forgo the invite to go out on the yacht for a New Years eve party. I did get to take it out for a really nice sail in the afternoon tho. Instead we went out to Jakes at Steenberg for their New Years Eve bash. It was fun, altho the service was crap and the cocktails and bubbles they gave us were terrible. The DJ and half the guests must have come in from the Nothern Suburbs... the DJ even played Leeuloop without being begged to!!! Anyway, we had some fun and got really trashed. Then went through to the La Colombe Staff Party which we did last year as well. What a massive jol that is. Everyone is pretty tonked and partying up a storm. DJ playing cool music, lots of bubbles (and decent stuff this time). Best mate G was there with his new chick. Had to ask him if she was legal... and if yes, when she ws leaving!!! Poor b@stard always chooses them too young and just before they leave for overseas...

Anyway, back at work, slaving away.
Here's to a fantastic 2007. It is definately going to bring about all sorts of wonderful new challenges, Spud being the most exciting one! We have really bonded with this little guy, and he isn't even half grown. 3 months is not a long time, and then we will finally get to meet him. He has been the cause of such joy already, one can only wonder how much more we can all take! I reckon alot more...

Happy New Year!
